Boeing has completed the power-on milestone for the first 737 Max 8 as the re-engined and updated single-aisle aircraft is pieced together on a new assembly line in Renton, Washington.
The power-on milestone activated a modernised cockpit featuring four 787-style multi-function displays supplied by Rockwell Collins.
Boeing plans to roll out its first 737 Max jetliner on Dec. 8, a significant step in moving toward delivery of the latest version of Boeing’s (NYSE:BA) smallest jet.
Such roll-outs are media events, a signal that flight testing will soon begin.
Actual deliveries to airlines are to start in the third quarter of 2017 to launch customer Southwest Airlines, one of the strongest buyers of the single-aisle jet.

As long as Mother Nature and other factors corporate, the first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is expected to take to the skies over Washington on Friday, January 29.
Boeing will further increase the 737 production rate to 57 aircraft per month in 2019, citing robust demand for narrowbodies, but the manufacturer is also cutting 777 production to seven aircraft per month in 2017.
The 777 rate cut to be implemented next year, which will bring production down from the current rate of 8.3 777s built per month, follows on the heels Boeing’s decision to cut 747-8 production to just 0.5 aircraft per month starting in September 2016. The 777 production rate slowdown will occur as Boeing transitions to 777X production—the first 777X is expected to roll out in 2018 with service entry slated for 2020.
