The management of Dutch national airport Schiphol, and the Haarlemmermeer municipality authorities, are currently studying the plans for the establishment of new spots for observation of the aircraft, that land on and take off from the airport's runways, Schiphol said on October 24, 2005.
According to a Schiphol spokesman, the current Schiphol observation spots, called Panoramaterras, Buitenveldertbaan and Kaagbaan, provide insufficient view to the airport's Polderbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways and the observers are forced to move from the official observation spots to find favourable locations closer to the runways, which endangers the flights traffic and hinders the airport security in detecting possible terrorists attacks, the spokesman explained.
(Editor's note: According to the Dutch News Digest, Schiphol reported on November 3, 2003, two million passengers less since 2000 due to the attacks in the USA on September 11, 2001, the war in Iraq and due to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS.)
