For the first time in history, an aircraft landed itself after the pilot became incapacitated and an emergency button was pressed by a passenger.
This historic event took place on Saturday, December 20, in the United States, involving a Beechcraft King Air B200 (registration N479BR).
The aircraft, which can carry up to 10 passengers, was flying near Denver, Colorado, when the pilot suddenly became ill. One of the passengers then activated the Garmin Autoland emergency system installed onboard.
Once activated, the system automatically switches the autopilot into emergency mode. It analyzes nearby runways, selects the most suitable one for landing, squawks the emergency transponder code 7600, sends an automated voice message to air traffic control, and begins a controlled descent. The aircraft configures itself for landing in accordance with standard operating procedures — and lands safely without pilot input.
