Estonian Air will change its course of action which focuses on important core destinations for Estonia with a real demand. Due to that Estonian Air suspends flights to Joensuu, Tartu and Helsinki.

The Supervisory Council of Estonian Air to change company’s direction
31.10.2012
The Supervisory Council of Estonian Air will change company’s direction and will assign Jan Palmér as the new CEO of Estonian Air as from 1 November 2012. At the same time, all the members of the Supervisory Council will present their membership resignation request to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications.

In autumn 2010, after acquiring the majority of company’s shares, Estonian State set Estonian Air a target to increase connections from Estonia, and to achieve profitability. In 2011, in order to reach the goal, the company introduced a new strategy which focused on expansion of the route network.

“By the middle of this year, it was clear that the chosen strategy of Estonian Air had risks realization of which worsened the company’s financial performance considerably,” said the Chairman of Estonian Air Supervisory Council.

The total revenue of Estonian Air in the first nine months of 2012 was 70.4 million euros, of which the third quarter comprised 26.6 million euros. Company’s nine month loss reached 20.2 million euros, third quarter loss was 5.3 million euros. The total revenue of Estonian Air in the first nine months of 2011 was 58.7 million euros and loss 11.2 million euros.

In the first nine months Estonian Air carried altogether 688 000 passengers, the passenger number of third quarter was 264 000. In the first nine months the load factor of Estonian Air flights was 71.5%, third quarter load factor was 74.8%.

“Based on the financial results and future prospects, the Supervisory Council decided to change the strategy approved last year and to name Jan Palmér as the new CEO of the company,“ said Raasuke. “Changed direction is based on core route network for Estonia, where there is a solid fundamental demand.“

Jan Palmér has over 20 years experience in aviation field. Palmér starts as the new CEO of Estonian Air from 1 November 2012. Palmér’s main goals are to ensure smooth service for the customers, to adjust the route network based on real economic demand, and to reduce company’s costs in proportion of the new business volumes.

“I use my experience from several regional airlines to support the change of direction requested by the Supervisory Council,. “ said Palmér.

Supervisory Council together with the new CEO will work actively on the medium-term plan for Estonian Air. The results will be presented to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications latest by the end of November.

According to Erkki Raasuke, the Supervisory Council wishes the company’s further direction to be evaluated by a renewed Council. “In order to implement the necessary changes, all members of the current Council present a resignation request to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications,“ said Raasuke.

Re: Estonian dropper Bombardier til fordel for Embraer

Estonian Air to reduce the number of employees
20.11.2012

Due to the need to adjust operations in accordance to the reduced flight capacity, Estonian Air will decrease its staff by 146 people. Workforce reduction will be applied to all structural units of Estonian Air. Currently 318 people are working in the company.

“Noticeable cutbacks in the flight volumes unfortunately leads to operating with smaller number of employees,“ explained Jan Palmér, the CEO of Estonian Air. "The structure of the company will be based on operating 5 aircraft and serving 9-10 core destinations.”

Estonian Air is working closely with the Estonian CAA during the whole downsizing process. "During such a large scale downsizing effort, we will consult the ECAA in every aspect of the restructuring to ensure the maximum level flight safety, which is the cornerstone in aviation," noted Palmér.

“The redundancy plan is adopted according to the decision by the Supervisory Council of Estonian Air to change the direction of the company, " said Palmér. "The model of operation for Estonian Air is based on core route network for Estonia, where there is a solid fundamental demand."

The redundancy plan is applied to personnel in administrative and flight operations divisions. “As a Company we wish to make every effort to carry out the change process with utmost possible care. The lay off process among administrative staff will start already now and the layoff of flight crews as soon as we have a clear picture of how to transfer the fleet into one type of 5 aircraft. Further details will be announced within coming weeks,” added Palmér.

After redundancy, the new structure of Estonian Air foresees altogether 172 employees, out of which 100 of flight crew and the rest of support functions and operational administration.

After reducing flight capacity Estonian Air will operate to ten destinations: Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels, Oslo, Moscow, St Petersburg, Kiev, Vilnius and Trondheim.
Estonian Air has earlier announced the cutbacks in the flight volumes and completion of the flights on the following routes:
- Tallinn-Riga route was closed on 18 September 2012
- Last flight on Tallinn-Tartu route will take place on 21 December and on Tartu-Tallinn on 22 December 2012.
- Last flight on Tallinn-Joensuu will be operated on 27 December 2012. From 13 November until 27 December Estonian Air will operate the Joensuu route with reduced flight schedule.
- Last flight on Tallinn-Jyväskylä route will be operated on 7 January 2013.
- Last flight on Tallinn-Helsinki route will be operated on 27 January 2013.
- Starting from 26 January to 12 March 2013, Estonian Air discontinues flights between Tallinn and Paris. Prior to, flight frequencies on Tallinn-Paris route will be reduced. Estonian Air will resume flights between Tallinn and Paris to meet the higher seasonal demand on 13,15,16,18, 20, 22, 23 and 25 March 2013. Starting from 6 June to 30 August 2013, Estonian Air will operate the route with two weekly flights.
- Last flight on Tallinn-Vienna route will be operated on 24 March 2013.

Re: Estonian dropper Bombardier til fordel for Embraer -> Restrukturerer

Hoppas sparplanen lyckas.

The operational loss of Estonian Air in 2012 was 35.8 million euros
21.03.2013

In 2012, the revenue of Estonian Air was 91.5 million euros. The company’s net operational losses was 35.8 million euros. Together with one-off costs (impairment on aircraft), the net loss for 2012 was 49.2 million euros.

The costs associated with the attempt to grow the airline and expand the route network amounted to approximately 26 million euros.

“Late last year, the Supervisory Council of the company decided to change Estonian Air’s business model from growth oriented carrier to a regional point-to-point airline,” says Jan Palmér, CEO of Estonian Air.

„While the airline carried a record number of passengers in 2012, low yields from the transfer traffic did not support the airline’s bottom line. Although the airline brought four new jet aircraft into service by the start of the summer season, overall the fleet transition proved to be more costly than planned,“ commented Palmér.

From the end of January 2013, Estonian Air is working according to the restructuring plan to become cost efficient regional carrier to provide flights to the destinations critically important for Estonia, where the demand is constantly high.

“Our turnaround is on track. We are changing from a traditional carrier to a small cost effective regional airline serving a core route network of ten destinations. We have already succeeded in increasing the yield, signed collective agreements with the crew, started to divest non-core assets and thus starting to be where we want to be. This gives us confidence to sustain the business,” added Palmér.

The ten core destinations of Estonian Air include Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels, Oslo, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Vilnius and Trondheim.
