Boeing needs a last-minute regulatory intervention to avoid a delay of the entry-into-service date later this month for the 787-9.

The company has asked the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to quickly approve exemptions that would allow the 787-9 to be delivered on schedule despite two critical flight systems deemed non-compliant with airworthiness regulations.

“The certification process provides a method for identifying component issues that do not result in an immediate safety concern but need to be addressed,” Boeing tells Flightglobal. “We have followed that process and proposed plans to the FAA to address two components on the 787-9.”

The requested exemptions would cover a newly-discovered reliability problem with the ram air turbine (RAT) and a functional issue with the altitude-select dial on the mode control panel, according to a Boeing petition for relief filed on 4 June.

Da ser det ut som Boeing har fått 787-9 godkjent av FAA og EASA, selv om det innebar at de fikk et par unntak da det blant annet var noen feil med RATen og noen andre småplukk da må fikse i ettertid.
Det betyr også at første maskin trolig blir levert Air New Zealand mot slutten av måneden

Ellers var det verdt å merke seg at da Kenya Airlines nettopp tok levering av sin nyeste maskin så tok det 88 dager fra man startet montering til flyet ble levert hvilket var ny rekord. Riktignok kun en dag bedre enn forrige rekord, men det interesante er at dette var en Charleston bygget maskin, så ser ut som de nå har tatt igjen forspranget til de på Everett

Ser MTOW for -9 og -10 varianten har økt til 252,651 kg. Da begynner rekkevidden for -9 og bli vesentlig lenger enn -8 som har mye lavere MTOW. Normalt har jo den korte varianten ofte mer lik MTOW en de lengre versjonene og dermed mer range

Boeing calls the gap between what it costs to manufacture a 787 and what the company sells the plane for “deferred production costs” and it projects such costs for the 787 program at $25 billion, which it will have to pay back before the plane is profitable. One analyst sees the shortfall at $35 billion and doesn’t think that the aircraft will be profitable until 2019 after the first 1,000 Dreamliners are delivered. Adding in all the development costs, another analyst figures that Boeing will not recover all its costs on the 787 until it sells at least 1,900 planes.

Har ikke gått helt etter planen enda, fikk dette svaret på face i går når jeg spurte TG om når de kom i gang.

Jeg har nevnt det tidligere i en eller annen tråd at 787-10 kommer til å bare bli bygd der. Dette skyldes at en del som produseres i NC-SC ikke får plass i Dreamlifteren. Ellers er det vel ikke så uvanlig i andre bransjer at ikke alle varianter produseres på alle produksjonssteder.

Dersom det går med 787 som det har gått med 777 så vil den største varianten bli storselgeren og 787-8 vil selge lite. Det vil da bli spennede å se hvordan det blir vis 787-10 f.eks står for 60% av salget. Blir det ny fabrikk i NC-SC?
