Rainer Uphoff, Madrid (16Mar05, 22:10 GMT, 80 words)
Southern Winds, Argentina’s second largest carrier, today filed for bankruptcy.
Few details are available, and no official statement has been released. However, Buenos Aires’ commercial law courts today listed the carrier as bankrupt.
Southern Winds was saved from bankruptcy in 2003 by a government contract worth close to $3 million a month to operate the flights of state-owned carrier Lafsa.
The contract was revoked in February amid allegations of drug smuggling.
Southern Winds reported owes to $50 million in debt.
