Delta Air Says More Than 3,000 Take Severance Offer (Update2)
By Hugo Miller
May 30 (Bloomberg) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. said more than 3,000 employees have accepted voluntary severance offers, at least 1,000 higher the carrier's target in March when it announced plans for reducing jobs and grounding planes.
Most of the front-line workers such as flight attendants and gate workers who accepted the offers will leave in September after staying through the busy summer travel season, Kent Landers, a Delta spokesman, said today in a telephone interview. The Atlanta-based carrier had sought to trim about 2,000 jobs.
``This gives us the flexibility to adjust to record fuel prices,'' Landers said, adding that the carrier may hire other workers to fill positions in operational areas if needed.
The fact that more people than expected took the offer eliminated the need for involuntary layoffs among front-line employees, Chief Executive Richard Anderson told workers in a message earlier this month. A reduction of 3,000 jobs would be about 5.5 percent of Delta's workforce.
