SK Spekulasjoner rundt nye SAS langlinjer - 2026 edition

The talks with Boeing are likely merely to show Airbus that they are considering it, in the hopes of getting a better discount hahah.

Additional A330neos are the most realistic! This would make sense on all the North American routes, but potentially even up to Thailand. Besides it shares the same typerating for pilots as the A350, so flights with last-minute technical issues or delays can be easily replaced with a reserve aircraft of the other type. Also training for technicians is limited due to their knowledge of the A330ceo. And lastly, deliveries can take place quite fast for these planes, especially compared to all other widebodies. Maybe 10 A330neos and 2 additional A350s?

Well... The AF/KLM group will most probably be the majority owner of SAS later this year... So I'm expecting that any new order will be coordinated with them.
The AF/KLM group currently has no A330neo on order. However, they have a large A350 order (with options for more) that will phase out A330s both in KLM and Air France.

So why buy a small fleet of A330neo for SAS? Then it would make more sense to get more A350s. If they need a smaller plane... Remember, both Air France and KLM operate Dreamliners, so maybe the talks with Boeing are not only for show...

Maybe the talks are not for show indeed, but it's definitely interesting for further route development. The A330neo makes sense for denser and shorter routes than the 787, which is more for thinner and longer routes. If SAS wants to add South America, South Africa and potentially Bali to their network they might go for the 787-9 for these routes. If SAS just wants to replace the A330-300 and grow in Canada, USA, Mexico and India, the A330neo would make the most sense for them, but of course the 787 would work as well. With the A330neos only, SAS can also use their A350s on the longer potentially new routes, though it might be hard to fill it up at first.

A330neos would besides also make sense if TAP becomes part of AFKL, in that case there will be less need to open routes to South America. And the A330neo will become part of AFKL anyway.

SAS have talked about having a widebody fleet consisting of only one family of aircraft for a while. If that's still the case, the A330Neo is unlikely as it would only increase the capacity in terms of the number of aircraft but not in the terms of passengers they can carry. If I remember correctly there has also been recent talks about adding more seats to the A350 fleet, which again would rule out the A330Neo as it's significantly smaller. We also see quite an ambitious upscale with the E195-E2's, which I think will be matched with the new widebody order. I think it'll be an order for both some A350-900's and -1000's. SAS know the A350 well, AF/KLM also has it in their fleet. It can carry more cargo and passengers more efficiently and it can cover all of the network at once adding flexibility.
