German carrier adds 717s for in-service evaluation
European carrier Germanwings at the end of October began flying two
Boeing 717s on short-term lease from Aerolineas de Baleares. Germanwings
is looking for smaller passenger jets than its present fleet of A320s.
It will evaluate the 717 during its busy winter months. Andreas
Bierwirth, Germanwings vice president of marketing, sales and business
development, told Flight International magazine that his airline is
impressed with the success of the 717 at AirTran Airways. "The cost side
on paper looks excellent, and we want to analyze this [in actual
service]," Bierwirth said.
