An Allegiant Air flight ran dangerously low on fuel last week as it circled an airport in North Dakota that was actually closed so the Navy's Blue Angels could practice for a forthcoming air show.

The pilot told the tower on Thursday that he didn't have enough fuel to make it to a back-up airport, so he was forced to declare an emergency to clear airspace for a landing at Fargo's Hector International Airport, according to a recording of air traffic between the pilot and tower available on the website LiveATC.net.

Cox said an airline's dispatch office and the pilot have a responsibility to know if an aircraft's destination is open or closed. The FAA provides notice of such closings.

"The pilot's going to get to answer some interesting questions from the FAA," Cox said.

.. ja, se det - og visstnok en stor tullebokk .. Men jeg slet litt med regnestykket når jeg leste artikkelen, og jeg er enig med han på pprune som mente at han løy om fuelstatus.

Men det kommer vel frem etterhvert ..

Vice president of flight operations Greg Baden and director of flight safety Michael Wuerger were at the controls of the July 23 flight with 144 passengers on board, the airline said. The identity of the pilots was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Tampa Bay Times har gravd litt og kommet opp med denne artikkelen. Allegiant har imidlertid aldri hatt dødsulykker.

A Tampa Bay Times investigation — which included a first-of-its kind analysis of federal aviation records — has found that the budget carrier’s planes are four times as likely to fail during flight as those operated by other major U.S. airlines.

In 2015, Allegiant jets were forced to make unexpected landings at least 77 times for serious mechanical failures.

Og halvannet år senere har CBS News’ 60 Minutes laget en reportasje om Allegiant og deres ekstreme hendelsesfrekvens. Så langt har de i imidlertid ikke hatt noen dødsulykker.
