Most intriguing to airline execs was "Tommy Class," a mid-level, business-class option named by trip organizer Tommy Danielsen, a Chicago-based sales executive. Here, passengers pay 50% more than a coach ticket and get the middle seat next to them blocked. It also gives them upgraded food, alcohol and extra frequent-flier miles. On the fantasy flights, this option sold out in all 10 rows before the rest of the coach cabin filled.

The Mega Do trip offered up another idea: a "get out of jail free" card that would occasionally exempt frequent fliers from airline rules, penalties or fees. Edward Pizzarello, an executive with a private-equity firm from Leesburg, Va., travels 200,000 miles a year and thinks airlines should be more flexible with their best customers.
Airlines often waive rules informally for their top fliers, but it can be a negotiation. Mr. Pizzarello thinks a coupon, earned after every 50 flights or so, would level the playing field. Right now, an airline can be late 10 flights in a row, but if a customer is late just once, a new ticket often has to be purchased. And airlines can make schedule changes without penalty, but if a customer books the wrong date for a trip, change fees are levied.
"It would be an awesome benefit," Mr. Pizzarello says.
