United, US Airways reported to be in merger talks

United Airlines (UA) and US Airways (US) are in talks to merge, in a potential deal that would create one of the world’s largest airlines, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Both companies have called for greater consolidation within the industry to help “prop up falling revenues,” the story said.

“The investor seems to have spoken,” United’s Chief Executive Glenn F. Tilton told The Financial Times in February. “The market seems to have suggested that scope and scale in a global business are important.”

Joda, dette er ofte diskutert, saerlig her paa forumet..., og det er ikke ofte noe kommer ut av dette. Av det jeg foelger med paa saa tror jeg det er mere konkrete planer denne gangen, sammenlignet med mange spekulasjoner og rykter tidligere... :8:

United Airlines parent UAL Corp. and US Airways are in advanced discussions about a merger, The New York Times reported on its website Wednesday. It cited "people briefed on the matter." Spokespersons for both airlines declined to comment to this website, citing company policy. The two companies tried to merge before: In May 2000 UA agreed to acquire US in a transaction that valued US at $4.3 billion. However, the Dept. of Justice refused to okay the merger and United backed away from the deal in the summer of 2001. Both carriers entered Chapter 11 following 9/11 and US eventually was acquired by America West in 2005, with the US Airways name surviving. UA Chairman and CEO Glenn Tilton has called for industry consolidation, as has US Chairman and CEO Doug Parker. US made an ultimately unsuccessful bid for Delta Air Lines in November 2006.

According to media reports, United Airlines and US Airways are in discussions to combine their companies into a single carrier that would leapfrog past American Airlines to become the second-largest in the U.S. Though spokesmen for both companies refused to comment yesterday, their CEOs have vocally supported industry consolidation in the past, and sources said the talks have been going on for weeks. A $4.3 billion merger negotiated in 2000 failed to win approval from regulators, and some of the sticking points could still be a problem today, including the carriers' combined strength in the Washington, D.C., market. Some analysts suggested the merger talks could spur bids from other carriers, including Continental Airlines, which held extensive merger discussions with United in 2008.

US Airways Group, Inc. (NYSE: LCC - News) today announced that it has discontinued recent discussions with UAL Corporation (NASDAQ: UAUA - News) regarding a potential merger between the two companies.

US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker issued the following statement:

“US Airways has long been a proponent for consolidation in our industry. As opportunities have arisen for our company to participate in consolidation, we have taken a close and careful look at our options, always with an eye on what is in the best interests of our shareholders, customers, employees and the communities we serve.

“We have recently held discussions with United Airlines regarding a possible combination between our two airlines. After an extensive review and careful consideration, our Board of Directors has decided to discontinue those discussions.
