Shanghai Airlines is to join the Star Alliance, making it the first Chinese carrier to become a member of the multilateral airline grouping.

Several sources at Shanghai Airlines and others familiar with the situation say there will be a ceremony in Shanghai on 10 May to mark the carrier’s commitment to join Star.

One source at Shanghai Airlines says the carrier has already established a dedicated office within its headquarters that is handling Star Alliance matters.

Shanghai Airlines chairman and CEO Zhou Chi was a guest at a Star event last month in Zurich, Switzerland at which CEOs from the various Star member carriers met to discuss issues.

At the Zurich event on 10 April, Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht said there would be an announcement in “the next few weeks” about which Chinese carrier will be the first to join.

Zhou has said on several occasions to ATI and sister publication Airline Business that Shanghai Airlines is interested in joining Star. Star has also said repeatedly that it has been talking to Shanghai Airlines as well as Air China.

Air China was the first to develop bilateral ties with Star member carriers and over the years had been touted as the frontrunner to join Star from China.

Beijing-based Air China already codeshares with some Star member carriers such as Lufthansa and United Airlines but Shanghai Airlines has been busily implementing codeshare relationships with Star Alliance carriers as well.

Shanghai Airlines currently codeshares with some Star member carriers such as All Nippon Airways and Lufthansa.
