Selvaggio resigns as head of Delta's low-cost unit Song
Darren Shannon, Washington DC (01Oct04, 23:10 GMT, 281 words)

John Selvaggio today resigned his position as president of Delta Air Lines’ low-cost unit Song.

In an internal memorandum, Delta CEO Gerald Grinstein today told the carrier’s staff that Selvaggio intends to “pursue personal interest”.

The resignation is effective immediately. Grinstein says the carrier is seeking a replacement, and that Song’s VP of marketing and customers Joanne Smith will temporarily assume Selvaggio’s responsibilities.

This is the latest in a growing number of resignations among both Delta’s mainline and Song’s higher ranks, which started in March with the loss of then president and COO Frederick Reid to Virgin America, a potential challenger to Delta’s own low-cost unit.

Just four days ago, Delta executive VP and chief customer service officer Vicki Escarra also announced her resignation. Escarra and Reid had formed the highest level of management at the end of Leo Mullin’s tenure last year as chairman and CEO of the Atlanta-based major.

Selvaggio’s successor will assume a heavy workload at Song; the president had been solely responsible for the day-to-day running of the carrier since the July resignation of VP operations David Pflieger in July. Pflieger now works at Virgin America.

“With more than 30 years of airline industry experience, John [Selvaggio] has been an integral member of Delta’s management team and was key to Song’s creation and successful first year of operations,” says Grinstein in his memo. “Today, Song has staked out a leadership position in the highly-competitive low-cost carrier marketplace and will be vital to Delta’s transformation and future,” he adds.

Selvaggio joined Delta in 1998 from US Airways to head its airport customer service, and was later involved in the acquisition of regional carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines in 1999.
