Saudi's National Air Services to start low-fare carrier
David Kaminski-Morrow (21Nov05, 16:40 GMT, 379 words)

Saudi Arabian operator National Air Services is turning its attention to establishing the first low-fare airline in the kingdom, following the setting up of its all-premium domestic carrier Al-Khayala.

National Air Services president Mohammed Al Zeer has disclosed the initiative at the Dubai Air Show. The company intends to launch the carrier, which would initially operate domestic routes, before summer next year.

The Jeddah-based company is finalising talks to secure aircraft for the venture and intends to disclose full details shortly. But the carrier is expected to use an initial fleet of four Airbus A320s.

National Air Services already uses a pair of corporate shuttle Airbus A319s for its Al-Khayala operation and has just ordered five Airbus A318s for VIP charters.

It says that this new order, plus the introduction of aircraft for the low-fare airline, will take its 28-strong fleet – presently comprising a range of business jets – to more than 50 in the next two years.

Saudi Arabia is gradually liberalising its air transport market and Al Zeer says that the country is ready to take advantage of budget operations, adding: “We conducted extensive feasibility and market studies before including this [low-fare] service in our strategic plan.

“We have met with all of the most successful low-cost operators in the world to fully understand the concept, and have employed top international consultants to review our results and our plans.

“This new service will have a significant impact on Saudi Arabia in many areas, increasing the number of flights operating throughout the kingdom, providing additional options for domestic travelers, generating new growth in the air travel market, creating new jobs for Saudi nationals, and increasing tourism.”

He says that the airline, so far unnamed, would later expand to serve other high-demand Middle East destinations.

“The low-cost airline concept is one which has revolutionised the commercial aviation market and is a non-traditional product which we believe fits nicely into our operation and our culture,” adds Al Zeer.

National Air Services, which has so far specialised in fractional ownership and executive charters, will establish the new airline as a strategic business unit.

Few budget airlines have so far emerged in the Middle East market. The United Arab Emirates has established Air Arabia while private Kuwaiti investors have just launched Jazeera Airways.
