Malaysia Airlines Announces Appointment of New Managing Director
Malaysia Airlines has appointed Mr. Idris Jala as its new Managing Director and CEO effective 01 December 2005, after an extensive executive search for a suitable candidate to help the Company turnaround its business.
Currently working for Shell, with whom he commenced his working life in June 1982, Idris has held various posts both in Malaysia and overseas in Human Resources, Retail, LPG, Business Development Consultancy, Business Re-engineering. He now oversees Shell Malaysia’s business interests in the LNG and Gas-to-Liquids sectors. Idris has had extensive experience at helping Shell operations globally with significant business challenges in the downstream sector.
Idris is presently the Vice President of Shell Malaysia Gas and Power and Managing Director of Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Idris has successfully led the business turnaround of SMDS since taking on this role in 2003.
Prior to that, Idris was the Vice President, Retail Marketing in Shell Retail International based in London. In this capacity, he worked with the Shell retail business units world-wide to improve the profitability of its retail business. He was involved in the successful roll-out of its Global Retail Strategy and Programme in many Shell retail businesses around the world.
Idris also previously held the position of Vice President of Business Development Consultancy, Shell International based in London. His remit was to lead a high calibre global team of in-house consultants to help the downstream business in Shell world-wide deliver significant business results through strategic marketing and business improvement initiatives.
In 1998, Idris was appointed the Country Chairman and Managing Director of Shell in Sri Lanka, where he led the turnaround of its LPG business there.
Before that, he held the two retail positions as Senior Manager, National Retail Sales and also Retail Area Manager for Central region based in Kuala Lumpur. He was also involved in the business re-engineering (BR) initiatives in Shell Malaysia as Associate Manager in the BR Core Team. Idris’ early career in Shell was in Human Resources in Sarawak Shell Berhad and also an assignment as HR Resource Planner in Shell Holland.
Idris, aged 47, is from Bario Sarawak. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Development Studies from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang in 1982. Upon graduation, he won the Bishen Kaur Award as the top student in Development Studies. Later, he was given a Shell scholarship which enabled him to obtain a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations at the University of Warwick in England.
The Chairman of Malaysia Airlines, Dato’ Dr. Munir Majid said “Given Idris’ varied experience and track record in Shell, the Malaysia Airlines Board is confident that Idris is well qualified to help the Company address its business challenges and opportunities.”
Idris not wanting to raise unnecessarily high expectations has this to say, “As I am not from the airline industry, I will have to learn fast. I will do my best to work with everyone in Malaysia Airlines. I believe the key to business turnaround lies in unleashing the talents of everyone in Malaysia Airlines.”
