Less than a week after American Airlines won permission to fly between Los Angeles and Shanghai, United Airlines has decided that American had a good idea there.

United said Tuesday it has asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to authorize daily nonstop Los Angeles-Shanghai service beginning May 20, 2011. Like American, United said it plans to use a Boeing 777 for the flight.

American and United both serve Shanghai from their Chicago hubs, and United flies to Shanghai from its San Francisco hub. At present, United offers connecting service from Los Angeles to Shanghai through San Francisco.

In addition, Continental Airlines, owned by United's parent United Continental, offers New York-Shanghai service.
