MADRID, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Fierce competition from low-cost airlines, especially Ryanair and EasyJet, will force Spain's Iberia to close some domestic and European routes, newspaper El Pais reported on Tuesday.
Quoting sources familiar with the sector, El Pais said several routes out of Barcelona, in the northeastern region of Catalonia, would be halted because Ryanair flies to numerous destinations from its Catalan bases at Reus and Girona.
It also said some routes linking Spanish provincial cities to Madrid and to European destinations would be affected, adding that competition was toughest on routes to Germany and to London.
No one at Iberia was immediately available to comment.
El Pais said Iberia management estimated that incentives from local governments eager to attract low-cost airlines to their regions amounted to "aid" worth between 10 and 17 euros ($13 to $22) per ticket.
