New Norwegian Capital link boost for Aberdeen
September 2008
Aberdeen will gain a direct link with Oslo as UK regional airline, Eastern Airways, today announces its first ever service to the Norwegian capital.
The launch of this latest route by the UK’s most punctual scheduled airline* from 12 January 2009, demonstrates the carrier’s commitment to further expanding services into Norway from Aberdeen.
The airline has already been providing a frequent service between north-east Scotland and Stavanger for over a year.
A 50-seat Saab 2000 aircraft will operate daily services, except Saturdays, with flights taking off from Aberdeen at 10.20am, arriving in Oslo at 1.05pm local time. Departures leave Oslo at 1.45pm, landing in Aberdeen at 2.30pm local time. Sunday services leave Aberdeen at 12.20pm, landing in Oslo at 3.05pm local time. Flights depart Oslo at 3.35pm, arriving in Aberdeen at 4.20pm local time.
The latest route complements Eastern Airways’ network of 11 destinations already served from Aberdeen and will offer greater flexibility for the many businesses which have bases in both Aberdeen City and Shire and Norway.
A number of large oil related companies have offices in Oslo, which has the busiest cargo port in the country, along with many shipping companies and insurance brokers.
Oslo Airport Gardermoen, which is just a 19 minute rail journey from the city, is located 50km north of the city and is Norway's largest international airport.
“Our first service to Norway’s capital will help to further strengthen business links between the city and Aberdeen,” said Graeme Ross, Eastern Airways’ Scotland director. “Our comprehensive Aberdeen network has been developed to provide businesses, including the energy sector, with vital city links and now with our second international service from the North-east, we are providing a capital city destination. We also expect city breaks to prove popular.
“Oslo is an extremely busy airport offering many internal connections within Norway, while our UK services from Aberdeen provide Norwegian travellers with connectivity options. This is also an excellent opportunity for north east businesses to capitalise on the wide range of services on offer between Aberdeen and Norway,” added Mr Ross.
Aberdeen Airport's managing director, Kevin Brown, said: "This is excellent news for both Aberdeen Airport and Eastern Airways, not to mention for the many passengers who will be delighted to welcome back a direct service from the north-east of Scotland to the Norwegian capital. Oslo is a beautiful city, the largest in Norway, and has so much to offer both business and leisure travellers.
"Eastern Airways have been providing the North-east with an excellent service and I am delighted to see the introduction of a second international flight to their schedule. This follows a number of recent route announcements at Aberdeen which clearly demonstrate airlines' confidence in this region and its airport.
“Given the very challenging economic environment the aviation industry currently finds itself in, the return of a regular service to Oslo is even more welcome."
Rita Stephen, development manager for Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Forum (ACSEF), added: “The creation of a modern, integrated transport network is a major theme for ACSEF in terms of its role to deliver economic growth, and better international air connections are central to that. This is more good news in that respect, not least in offering greater choice in our links with such a key business destination.”
Oslo is an ideal short break destination located on the shore of Oslo fjord and close to the Oslomarka green hills. The city has international cuisine, cosmopolitan shopping and a variety of art museums, and with its Viking heritage a visit to the Viking Ship Museum is a must. In the winter Oslo has hundreds of kilometres of cross country ski trails and eight ski centres.
Aberdeen and the Grampian region will appeal to Norwegian tourists taking golfing holidays, visiting the world famous malt whisky trail, the variety of historic castles and shopping trips to the city centre.
As well as Norway, Eastern Airways also flies from Aberdeen to Bristol, Durham Tees Valley, Newcastle, Southampton, Leeds Bradford, East Midlands, Humberside, Norwich, Stornoway and Wick.
