Avies (U3, Tallinn Lennart Meri) and its contract with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) have come under increasing fire from Swedish pilot and flight technician unions, Pilotförening and Flygteknikerförening, over the Estonian carrier's alleged poor maintenance standards.

Sveriges radio reports that the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (Statens HaveriKommission - SHK) uncovered several instances of poorly maintained aircraft following the conclusion of Avies' northern Swedish commuter contract this summer.

Despite Trafikverket having fined the carrier, Avies has continued to operate its Jetstream 31s as the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen), the entity responsible for designating government contracts, has yet to move against the Estonian carrier.

Flygteknikerförening, meanwhile, has set about establishing its own airline to secure Avies' contractual work which includes flights between Sveg, Luleå, Stockholm Arlanda, Torsby, Mora, Hagfors, Östersund, and Sundsvall-Härnösand.

Last week, police in Jämtland County embargoed its members from flying with Avies.

AIS Airlines (Netherlands) (IS, Amsterdam) has taken over the Umeå, Sweden operations that were left vacant by Avies (U3, Tallinn Lennart Meri) following the termination of its wet-lease contract with Direktflyg (HS, Borlänge/Falun) last week.

Sweden's Flygtorget newswire says that with the Estonian carrier's dismissal over alleged tardiness and safety issues, the Dutch operator has since deployed its Jetstream 32s onto flights from Umeå to Sundsvall-Härnösand and Luleå.

Oktober 2015 - Oktober 2019...

Og da var det slutt...
A northern Estonian court has declared Avies (U3, Tallinn Lennart Meri) bankrupt following a petition submitted by two of the carrier's Swedish business partners, SwedeWings AB and Bromma Air Maintenance AB.

The firms filed a bankruptcy motion after the Estonian carrier failed to settle their claims and was late in discounting assets on its balance sheet.

The carrier had earlier told the LETA news agency that despite plummeting revenue inflows, it itself did not see any danger of bankruptcy adding that the two firms were "just small creditors."

The last twelve months have been particularly difficult for the carrier given the cancellation of three Swedish PSO contracts - Stockholm Arlanda-Mora-Sveg, Stockholm Arlanda-Hagfors-Torsby, and Pajala-Luleå - by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) after it grew impatient with the Estonian operator's incessant flight delays and cancellations.

About twenty former Avies pilots have also filed claims against the airline for unpaid wages.

As it stands, Avies continues to operate with scheduled flights between Tallinn Lennart Meri, Kuressaare, and Kärdla locally and to Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden.

The Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications has rejected a proposal by Avies (U3, Tallinn Lennart Meri) to partner Skytaxi (Poland) (TE, Wroclaw) in the resumption of flights between the Estonian mainland and the islands of Kuressaare and Kärdla effective April 11.

In a statement, the Ministry said that since the Estonian Civil Aviation Administration (Lennuamet) suspended Avies's AOC earlier this month, the carrier's contract to service the routes was no longer considered valid. As such, the contract will be retendered for in the coming weeks to ensure connectivity throughout the summer season, the ministry said.

Thus far, Nordica (Tallinn Lennart Meri) has expressed an interest in servicing the routes with other regional operators expected to apply as well.
