ATR på hydrogen fra 2025?

Som en snarvei til hydrogendrift, hevder et selskap det skal være mulig å konvertere Dash-8 og ATR-42 maskiner til hydrogendrift, ved å fjerne de bakerste seteradene (ca 20% av setene) og bruke dette som en modulbasert lagring av hydrogen. Dette vil enten gi 400nm rekkvidde med komprimert hydrogen eller 550nm med flytende.

En vesentlig forskjell fra Airbus sitt konsept er at det her er snakk om fuel cells og elektriske motorer, mens de i Airbus sitt tilfelle er snakk om forbrenningsmotorer som går på hydrogen

Universal Hydrogen, a California-based startup co-founded by former Airbus chief technology officer Paul Eremenko, has launched plans to convert regional airliners to hydrogen power. The company says its business model will encourage early adoption of the carbon-free fuel by the air transport industry before manufacturers develop new aircraft with hydrogen propulsion as standard equipment.

Det koster å være innovativ, og Universal er tomme for penger og gir seg. De har heller ikke overkommet et par relativt store hindringer ..

It also had to deal with the reality that hydrogen fuel takes up a lot more space on the airplane than jet fuel, reducing room for passengers.

Another huge barrier is that Universal’s project depended on a large, reliable supply of what’s known as “green hydrogen.”

Green hydrogen has to be produced using electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar to make the process emission-free. Most of the hydrogen used today is produced from natural gas in a process high in carbon-dioxide emissions.

Så det blir sikkert konkurs, salg av patenter og rettigheter og så kommer det noen 'bak' som klarer å gjøre dette finansielt og operasjonelt drivverdig. Om noen år....

Og 'minus minus' gir i dette tilfellet tydeligvis enda mere minus ..

In a last-ditch attempt to save the company, Eremenko said management attempted to merge with a regional airline that would retrofit its planes with hydrogen power.

The documents show that airline was Florida-based Silver Airways. Silver has been losing money for the past year and funding its ongoing operations with debt, the documents state.
