An-26 crashes in Congo
Leithen Francis, Singapore (06Sep05, 07:23 GMT, 172 words)

An Antonov An-26 has crashed in the African nation of Congo reportedly killing all passengers and crew.

Local radio station Radio Okapi says the An-26 turboprop - operated by Kavatshi Airlines on behalf of local company Galaxie – hit a tree and crashed yesterday as it was trying to land in poor visibility at an airport near the town of Isiro, in the north of the country and northeast of the capital Kisangani.

It says the aircraft departed the town of Beni at around 06:30 and crashed at around 07:28 around 1,500m (4,900ft) from Isiro airport’s runway. Beni is located near the border with Uganda and is about 300km southeast of Isiro.

Reports on the number of people on board vary between eight and 11, but most reports say there were seven passengers and four crewmembers. All were reportedly killed in the crash.

Congo, formerly Zaire, went through a civil war which destroyed some of its infrastructure and, although the war ended in 2003, civil unrest still persists in parts of the country.
