Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK - News) today reported third quarter 2011 net income of $77.5 million, or $2.12 per diluted share, compared to net income of $122.4 million, or $3.32 per diluted share. Excluding mark-to-market fuel hedge losses of $84.3 million ($52.4 million after tax, or $1.43 per diluted share) and fleet transition charges of $2.0 million ($1.2 million after tax or $0.03 per diluted share), the company reported record third quarter 2011 net income of $131.1 million, or $3.58 per diluted share, compared to net income of $118.1 million, or $3.21 per diluted share, excluding special items.
 
Det virker til nå som det ihvertfall går bra på inntektssiden, og det først og fremst er AA som sliter pga kostnadene. Men de er jo også de eneste av de store nettverkselskapene der borte som ikke har vært i Ch.11 og kunnet kuttet brutalt i kostnadene
 
Underskudd på $140 millioner for Southwest. Men det skal sies at her er det drivstoff hegdging som ødelegger. Når oljeprisen faller, blir drivstoffkontraktene deres mindre verdt, og de må regnskapsføre dette som tap. Rent operasjonelt går det svært bedre og uten dette hadde de hatt et overskudd på $122 milioner

While its airline business did well during the peak travel season, Southwest posted a $140 million third-quarter loss because its fuel-hedging bets turned sour when oil prices fell this summer. It was Southwest's first loss in two years -- the last one was also due to hedging.

Without the hedging markdown and one-time expenses, Southwest would have earned $122 million, or 15 cents per share -- a penny better than analysts expected

The company ended the September 2011 quarter with $5.1 billion in unrestricted liquidity.

We are continuing our focus on near term projects. We now have two 166 seat MD-80 aircraft in service on our Bellingham routes, and we are beginning to sell into the extra seats.

"Our 757 activity was successful during the quarter as well. We began operations with our initial 757 aircraft in late July and operated it on two routes to and from Las Vegas. For a nominal amount of additional fuel burn, we are generating 67 additional profit potential seats. These additional seats on our peak days, in the proper markets, are expected to contribute significant incremental profit.
