The airline went through a lengthy government process to get certified to fly Boeing 757s over water but apparently didn't anticipate the weight issues.

Seymour said the problem is that three of the 757s the airline is using on the routes are approved for a maximum takeoff weight of 240,000 pounds. That is plenty on a day of normal winds and normal passenger loads, but becomes a problem when both are extraordinary.
