Airbus Blade-prosjekt

Another area of exploration is possible ways to reduce aircraft drag. This is the aim of BLADE, a project headed by Airbus to design a new kind of laminar wing that displaces turbulence “as far as possible from the wing’s leading edge,” in the words of project leader Daniel Kierbel.

By modifying the shape, materials and surface of the wings, fuel consumption can be reduced by 4.6%. “That may not seem like much, but when it’s multiplied by the potential number of short-range aircraft currently in operation around the world, it starts to become really significant,” he points out.

The Clean Sky 2 BLADE (Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe) demonstrator, was rolled out of its hangar in Tarbes in the south of France at the start of September. BLADE is a highly-modified Airbus A340 airliner and the culmination of nearly ten years of research, planning and ground tests by Airbus and its industrial and academic partners on this pan-European aerospace project. With its outer wings removed and replaced by two new panels packed with sensors, BLADE is set to study laminar flow in flight to a level of detail never seen before.

Each of the outer NLF wing sections are supplied by two different manufacturers (GKN Aerospace and Saab) with each featuring a different construction and assembly. GKN's wing, on the starboard, features a more conventional architecture with a metal leading edge and composite cover. Saab’s wing on the port wing, on the other hand, features a one-piece composite surface, with integrated rib feets and spar cap.

Airbus has launched an extra-performing wing demonstrator project focused on accelerating and validating technologies that will improve and optimise wing aerodynamics and performance for any future aircraft. This scaled demonstrator will integrate and fly breakthrough wing technologies on a Cessna Citation VII business jet platform in representative flight conditions. The applications of the extra-performing wing would be compatible with any propulsion solution and aircraft configuration and would reduce CO₂ emissions, contributing greatly to Airbus’ decarbonisation roadmap.
