Allegiant Air, a small airline that has built its business on regularly scheduled service to Las Vegas, is hoping to replicate that success in Central Florida. The Las Vegas-based company said Thursday that it would begin nonstop service May 26 to Orlando Sanford International Airport from Des Moines; Iowa; Lansing, Mich.; Madison, Wis.; and Peoria, Ill. Allegiant plans to make Sanford its eastern base with long-term expansion plans, spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said. The airline plans to hire 50 employees initially, mostly ground crew, maintenance and terminal staff, she said. The new service follows the recent loss of two airlines at the Sanford airport. Southeast Airlines shut its doors in December, and Canadian carrier Jetsgo pulled out earlier this month.
