ROCHESTER, Minn. — Regulations kept 47 passengers confined in a small ExpressJet airplane for nine hours at the Rochester airport.

Passenger Link Christin says the ordeal Friday was a nightmare. The flight left Houston, Texas about 9:30 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in the Twin Cities by midnight. But the flight was diverted to Rochester because of thunderstorms.

CO, responds to CO Express Flight 2816 extended ground delay

CO issued a statement about CO Express Flight 2816, from IAH to Minneapolis (MSP) Friday night. The flight had an extended delay after diverting to Rochester (RST), Minn., due to thunderstorms.

“We are working closely with ExpressJet to review and quickly resolve the issues surrounding this extended delay as we recognize that service provided to customers on this flight was completely unacceptable. Continental takes responsibility for the care of its customers. We are reinforcing with our regional partners the importance of adhering to our CustomerFirst commitments that are required as part of our agreements. We are reaching out to all of our customers to apologize and to offer them a full refund for their entire trip and a certificate good for future travel,” CO’s statement said.

Naa forstaar jeg ogsaa at TSA hadde en finger med i spillet, men dette er ingen unnskydning og slikt skal ikke skje...

Jeg skjoenner ikke at ingen insisterte paa aa forlate skuta. Det hadde jeg gjort under en time etter landing selv om skippern hadde nekta

Er det slik å forstå at hvis paxen var sluppet i land, så ville de ikke kunnet gå ombord igjen fordi det var ingen til å jobbe i sikkerhetskontrollen? Burde de ikke kunne gått i land i "sterilt" område siden de kommer fra en annen innenlands destinasjon?

Naar TSA er gaatt hjem, er ikke det sterile omraadet sterilt. Tror at det var ett av 'problemene'. Men det stoerste problemet var at ingen der ville ha noe med kjerra aa gjoere ..

Men hadde vaert noen der som ville loese dette, hadde det ikke vaert noe problem aa ta dem opp i gateomraadet, sette opp noen tausperringer og bestille pizza og brus. Alt det kreves er at noen tar seg av oppsyn og organsisering.

Maskinen var uansett paa en diversion airport, og da gjelder det litt andre sikkerhetsregler, men det var det tydeligvis heller ingen som visste ...

Pilot pleaded to evacuate stranded passengers

WASHINGTON – Federal officials said Friday that the airline whose passengers were stranded overnight on a Minnesota airport tarmac wasn't at fault, but they blamed another airline for refusing requests to allow the passengers to enter the airport's terminal.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said an investigation by his department found that the captain of Continental Express Flight 2816 and other officials for ExpressJet, the regional air carrier that operated the flight for Continental Airlines, repeatedly pleaded to allow the passengers to deplane and enter the Rochester terminal.

There were turned down by representatives of Mesaba Airlines, who incorrectly said that the passengers couldn't be allowed inside because Transportation Security Administration personnel had left for the day, LaHood said in a statement. That was incorrect — passengers could have stayed in a separate "sterile" area, he said.

Mesaba was the only airline with staff still at the airport during the incident earlier this month.

The plane left Houston at 9:23 p.m. local time on Aug. 11, but was diverted by thunderstorms to Rochester. Passengers were kept for about six hours waiting inside the cramped plane amid wailing babies and a smelly toilet even though they were only 50 yards from a terminal.

In the morning they were allowed to deplane. They spent about two and a half hours inside the terminal before reboarding the same plane. They arrived in Minneapolis, their destination, after 11 a.m. CDT.

"We have determined that the Express Jet crew was not at fault. In fact, the flight crew repeatedly tried to get permission to deplane the passengers at the airport or obtain a bus for them," LaHood said.

"There was a complete lack of common sense here," the secretary added. "It's no wonder the flying public is so angry and frustrated."

Mesaba is a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, which is a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.

A spokesman for Mesaba parent Delta Air Lines Inc. did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Det er bare helt hårreisende. Da lar ikke folk sitte fengslet i et fly i 6 timer bare fordi sikkerhetsfolka har gått for dagen. Da sørger du for at de eller politiet stiller opp. Eller du gir blaffen i reglene.

Glad jeg aldri har opplevd slikt.

I USA er det ikke "bare bare" å gi blaffen i reglene, og faren for å miste sertifikat og jobb er så stor at man er uhyre varsom med å gjøre noe uten tillatelse fra "proper authority". Og finner man ikke den, blir det som her, at man blir sittende. Idiotisk, men slik blir det når samfunnet blir overregulert.
