Fra airliners.net:
British Airways was in a precarious spot today in ATL when their 777 that was to operate Flight 2226 to LGW went tech. The plane would have to be ferried out of ATL leaving 160 pax behind. Looking for any kind of relief, British Airways customer service contacted AirTran to check on availability out of ATL to one of the other cities that British serves in the US. Rather than offer them seats, we did one better....we offered them an airplane. AirTran Flight 6206 will operate ATL-IAD with a 717 carrying 117 pax and their bags to connect with a British Airways flight to LHR. AirTran staff in IAD was able to secure Gate D-25 in IAD which I believe is right next to where British Airways departs from. This is the first time in recent memory that we have had another airline charter one of our aircraft.
