Icelandairs toppsjef gjennom 20 år, Sigurdur Helgason, meldte i dag fra til styreet at han gir seg i jobben som CEO, men fortsetter som "konsulent"
PRESSEMELDING:
Changes in Flugleidir Icelandair Group Top Management
At a board meeting this morning Sigurdur Helgason, Flugleidir Icelandair Group President and CEO for the last 20 years, announced his retirement on May 31 2005. Helgason originally joined Icelandair as Director of Management and Insurance in July 1974. He later became Senior Vice President Finance and then General Manager for Icelandair in the US. He was appointed President and CEO June 1 1985. Helgason has agreed to advice and consult the board for the next few years after his tenure as president. At the meeting this morning the board agreed Chairman Hannes Smarason would act as an executive Chairman as of today and focus on expansion and business development.
Mr. Helgason said today, when he announced his decision to The board, that this was the right time for change. "I have been very fortunate in my career. Flugleidir Icelandair Group is without a doubt one of the most interesting companies in Iceland and I have had with me a solid management team and fantastic employees. Together we have built a very dynamic and successful company in various fields of aviation and tourism. We have built a unique transportation network between Iceland and Europe and the US, and laid the foundation for tourism, Iceland's fastest growing industry. In comparison with other international airlines, the financial result of Flugleidir Icelandair Group has been sound. The company is well prepared for the future and ready for new opportunities and further expansion. I believe this is a good time to hand the torch over to the next generation"
Hannes Smarason, Flugleidir Icelandair Group Chairman said today: "Sigurdur Helgason has been extremely successful in his work for Icelandair. He has been a strong leader in the growth and development of the company and leaves Icelandair in a good position for further expansion into new markets. Icelandair will reap the benefits of his work for a long time and we are grateful for his excellent work for more than three decades. It will be my role and the board's to define a strategy for further advancement of the company and we will enjoy Helgason's expertise and counsel for years to come."
