Northwest, Delta begin downsizing
Monday September 19, 2005
Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, both of which filed for Chapter 11 protection last Wednesday, have begun shrinking their operations.Northwest told its pilots union it intends to cut flying hours by 13% over the next eight months, which will result in furloughs for 400 of the 5,200 pilots currently flying, according to the Air Line Pilots Assn.
Separately, it asked the bankruptcy court for authority to reject leases or finance agreements on 13 stored aircraft comprising one 747, one DC-10-30, six 757s, one A320 and four DC-9s. It also identified an additional 102 aircraft "that, under existing lease or debt terms, are not of benefit" to the airline, but could be of benefit "if the lease or debt terms were revised." These comprise 35 BAe 146s/Avro RJ85s operated by Regional partner airlines, 22 757s, 20 A320s, six A319s, seven DC-10-30s, eight 747-200s and three 747-400s.
Delta, meanwhile, wants to return all 30 of its 328JETs, which are believed to parked, as well as five MD-11s, three of which are subleased to World Airways, and four 737-200s.
