If you think you're hurting from high gasoline prices, consider the plight of Delta Air Lines and other carriers.
A river of fuel flows to Atlanta's airport to feed airliners — enough to fuel the daily commute for almost half of the 13-county Atlanta region's cars. And its cost has jumped by more than 50 percent in the past year.
Airlines have retired a lot of older, fuel-guzzling planes, but jet fuel demand at Hartsfield-Jackson International has stayed about the same as they add more flights, said Jacque Williams, director of product movement at Plantation Pipe Line, one of two companies that pipe both jet and auto fuel to the metro area.
A look at jet fuel use in Atlanta:
• The airport's carriers use about 2.8 million gallons of jet fuel daily, compared to about 6.3 million gallons of gasoline daily for Atlanta's motorists.
• Delta alone buys about 2 million gallons daily.
• Airport fuel suppliers and users have 22 storage tanks that hold 27.6 million gallons.
• It takes about 7,670 gallons of fuel for a 285-seat Boeing 767 to fly from Atlanta to Los Angeles, not counting reserves, wind or other factors.
• The cost of that fuel now: $11,700. A year ago: $7,600.
