bmi announces two new routes from Kalmar to Berlin and Gothenburg

Kalmar Öland Airport announces two new routes: Berlin and Gothenburg

UK airline, bmi, introduce new direct services from Kalmar Öland Airport

June 19, 2014: New scheduled flights connecting Kalmar Öland Airport directly with Germany's capital, Berlin, and Gothenburg, will commence 1st September 2014. The announcement that the UK’s most punctual airline is to fly direct services to Berlin and to Gothenburg has been widely welcomed by the Kalmar business community and is the result of several years of collaboration between Kalmar Öland, Kalmar Municipality and Kalmar Flygutveckling, representing several of the region's businesses. The new route from Kalmar Öland Airport to Berlin is the first direct scheduled air link between Kalmar and Germany.

“It is important for Kalmar Öland Airport to select destinations where we have the potential to succeed by targeting to several different audiences”, says Ronny Lindberg, Airport Manager at Kalmar Öland Airport. “Berlin will give companies in the Kalmar vicinity another opportunity to easily travel to and within Germany, Europe or the world, and attract business contacts in a more convenient way. Berlin is also listed as one of Europe's most popular weekend destinations, and will make a positive contribution to the leisure traveler living in the area. Furthermore, Germany is a priority market for the visitors industry in Småland and Öland, and the new Berlin route will give us the possibility to reach more market segments in Germany”, ends Ronny.

“Finally, after three years of work, we have reached our goal. The commitment to the Berlin route is very important both for business and for the tourist industry. Moreover, it gives leisure travellers the opportunity to choose from new destinations from our airport.” said Johan Persson, Mayor Kalmar City Council.

In addition to Berlin, bmi and Kalmar Öland Airport are launching a new route to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, Sweden´s second largest city and airport. The new flight will take just 35 minutes, significantly reducing the current four hour travel time required by road and rail.

“It is really gratifying to get another destination from our airport with bmi. Their service to Kalmar Öland Airport will be a welcome and important addition to the routes available from Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, especially for businesses in our region’, commented Charlotte Ljunggren, Airport Director, Swedavia, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport.

“We are delighted to announce these two new routes in partnership with Kalmar Öland Airport. bmi already has extensive experience in Sweden with our existing routes from Gothenburg to Birmingham and Stavanger, Karlstad to Frankfurt, as well as our partnership with Flyglinjen. These new routes improve accessibility to and from Kalmar Öland Airport significantly. From Berlin, there are connections to most parts of the world, and, of course, the flight to Gothenburg will significantly reduce the travel time to West Sweden” says Ian Woodley, Board Director, bmi.

Maria Edner, Communications Manager at Scania Oskarshamn comments "We are very happy with the new route to Berlin. It will make it easier for us to travel from Kalmar Öland Airport to Berlin and onwards to cities in Germany, Europe and the world."
Tomas Johansson, CEO, Norden Machinery said: "These new routes are a great addition to Kalmar Öland Airport, and open up new possibilities to rapidly connect to the world, including India and Southeast Asia".

The Kalmar Öland Airport – Berlin and Gothenburg flights will be operated with a 49 seat Embraer 145 jet and commences on 1st September 2014. Flights are available for sale from Kalmar Öland Airport to Berlin and Gothenburg from 18th June on the airlines website www.flybmi.se or at any travel agency.
