Eller bare business as usual .......?

A couple of days ago I wrote about how Zimbabwe took delivery of a Boeing 777 this week, which used to fly for Malaysia Airlines.

Zimbabwe’s government owned airline is 300 million USD in debt, so Zimbabwe is doing what any rational government would do, and is acquiring four 777s that they’ll be leasing to a start-up airline in their country. Bye bye Air Zimbabwe, hello Zimbabwe Airways! What could possibly go wrong?

Positiv utvikling for luftfarten i Afrikanske land, men ting tar tid.

Secondly, Zim Airways clearly has no capacity to operate those aircraft, as they have no trained pilots and engineers for them.”

“This means the we will need to hire expatriates to fly the planes, and the going rate for a B777 captain is at least $20,000 per month which is unaffordable in this market, where you don’t even have the passengers to justify the investment.”

Asked on why government had set up Zimbabwe Airways in the first place, considering the administration’s failure to capitalise Air Zimbabwe, Matiza said there was nothing wrong with having a second national airline.

“There is nothing wrong with having two national airlines; it (Zimbabwe Airways) was set-up for strategic business but our main purpose right now is to have Air Zimbabwe in the sky.

Tralla-la ....

International aviation consultancy Knighthood Global - led by former Etihad Airways executives James Hogan and James Rigney - is working on a strategic plan for the Zimbabwean government to jumpstart the country's aviation industry, including Air Zimbabwe (UM, Harare International), local airports, and ground handling services. A first feasibility study is scheduled for completion by the end of August 2023.
