Air Europa ready to bid again for Aeromexico
Kerry Ezard, Madrid (26Jan06, 15:44 GMT, 218 words)

Spain’s Air Europa plans to enter another bid for Aeromexico as soon as Mexican Government-controlled holding company Cintra puts the carrier back on the market.

Speaking to ATI at the FITUR international tourism trade fair in Madrid, an Air Europa spokeswoman said the only reason the carrier withdrew from the bidding process last year was that its Mexican partner in the planned transaction, Grupo Angeles, had not prepared the necessary paperwork in time.

“Whenever the [Mexican] Government says what it wants to do with Aeromexico, we are ready to present an offer,” says the spokeswoman. She adds that Air Europa remains “very interested” in acquiring Aeromexico and that it will likely team up with a “different partner” than last time to enter a second bid.

She declines to say what Air Europa plans to do with Aeromexico, should the carrier´s bid be successful.

Cintra – which is changing its name to Consorcio Aeromexico - has said it may attempt to sell Aeromexico through the Mexican stock exchange early this year, following its failure to privatise the carrier at the end of 2005.

In November, the holding company accepted an offer from Mexican hotel operator Grupo Posadas for Mexicana and its low-cost subsidiary, Click Mexicana. However, bids for Aeromexico were rejected because they failed to meet the carrier´s minimum value.
