A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Fokker turbo-prop plane carrying 41 passengers and four crew crashed near the central city of Multan on Monday, officials said.

The plane bound for the eastern city of Lahore came down a few minutes after it took off.
Flames were rising from the scene of the crash at Suraj Miani, near Multan, where the plane appeared to have hit an electric power line while crashing.

The wreckage was in an open field. Police had cordoned off the scene and rescue operations were underway in the area.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane with about 45 people on board has crashed in central Pakistan, officials say.

The Fokker aircraft crashed soon after taking off from the city of Multan and burst into flames.

Many of those on board are feared dead, police say. Rescue teams are struggling to control the blaze. Witnesses report seeing a number of burnt bodies.

Police have cordoned off the area and are keeping people away from the scene.

"The plane lost contact with the control tower about two minutes after take-off. We don't know what happened to it," PIA engineer Mansoor A Rahi told the Associated Press news agency.

Flight PK 688 was heading for Lahore and then Islamabad, reports say. It appeared to hit an electric power line while crashing in a field.

Kanskje tabloid overskrift Blubird, men det ser ut å stemme at flere ulykker kommer i klynger.
Grunnen til at du ikke finner den på ASN, er at det er nettopp har skjedd - det er enda noen minutter igjen til at den skulle ha landet i Lahore.

Pakistan International Airlines regrets to confirm that one of its Aircraft Fokker operating PK-688 from Multan to Lahore was involved in an accident at 1200 hours PST.

At the moment information is being gathered from the accident there were 41 passengers and 4 crew on board.

En kjapp oppsummering viser at PIA har hatt intet mindre enn 13 havarier med Fokker 27, med 139 mennesker omkommet i disse.

PIA har satt alle sine 7 gjenværende F27 på bakken, og dermed er det store vansker med å gjennomføre inneriksflygninger. PIA har tatt noen 737-300 fra utenlandsruter og satt inn på innenriks, og har i tillegg bedt militæret om hjelp. PAF stiller med C-130!
