Norge Color Air

Default Re: Color Air

I 1998/99 skrev jeg denne saken for Airways.

The age of deregulation dawned on Norway and Scandinavia last summer in the shape of Color Air. When its inaugural flight left Oslo for Ålesund on August 6, 1998, it was the first no-frills' domestic flight in Norwegian history. It also marked the end of five years of planning for the team behind the airline.
Color Air's management corps has substantial experience, not only from various Norwegian and European airlines, but also from Norway's largest shipping line, Color Line. "During the financing period, we met with several interesting investors," says Morten Andersen, Color Air's chief executive officer. "However, it was through the owner of Color Line, Olav Nils Sunde, that we found the best win-win' solution. Color Line has a very strong and established brand name. By choosing the Color logo and name, we are already associated with quality and service, which will benefit us in the long run."
In building the airline, Color Air's strategy is to buy services from contractors instead of establishing an expensive organization of its own. "We are a strictly no-frills, low-fare' airline," admits Andersen. "Our success lies in maintaining low operational costs. While the growing number of pilots and cabin attendants are all employed by the airline, we have subcontracted most other services. We operate Boeing 737-300s leased from ILFC. Technical maintenance is contracted to British Midland, which has technicians based in Norway. Ground handling is performed by Servisair at Oslo Airport and SAS elsewhere. This leaves a very tight organization focused on running the airline. Thus, we have eliminated all costs that do not benefit all our passengers. A Color Air ticket is a ticket to fly between point A and point B_nothing more, nothing less. Should a passenger require more than this_for example, newspapers or something to eat or drink_it is available at a small cost."
In the initial phase of operation, Color Air flies under the AOC (Air Operator's Certificate) of UK-based AirFoyle. All aircraft are on the UK register and follow UK regulations. This is possible as Norway complies with new European Union regulations (through its membership in the European Economic Area). The company expects to have its own Norwegian AOC by mid-1999.
Although the airline shares a joint booking office with Color Line, Color Air has broken new ground in terms of flight reservations and payment. In addition to the traditional call center, and the increasingly more common Internet reservation system, people using a credit card or a bank draft are now able to pay from the supermarket check-out counter, as Color Air has teamed with Norwegian supermarket chain Rimi to offer this service. "To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to use supermarkets as a payment channel for this kind of product," Andersen remarks. "It is also where we expect to meet our main target group. Our studies have shown that there are a number of people who would like to travel and visit family and friends. These are the ones who normally do not fly because of the cost involved and the restrictions that apply to the cheaper tickets. We give them the freedom of choice. Our fares have no restrictions. You can buy a one-way fare, spend as many or as few nights as
is convenient for you_not the airline.
Before deregulation, there were only two airlines in the Norwegian marketplace_Braathens and SAS. Within Scandinavia, SAS has been the dominant force. "Domestic competition has been nearly nonexistent. SAS and Braathens split the market between them. Within Scandinavia, SAS controls the lion's share. We mean to change this," Andersen continues.
Color Air plans to operate a spoke-and-hub system from its base at Oslo's new international airport (OSL). The first flights were to Ålesund and Trondheim. Bergen was added from August 15; Stavanger, later this fall. Other domestic routes being considered are Oslo-Kristiansand and
Oslo-Tromsø. "Initially, we have and will concentrate on Norway – which is and will be our primary market," Andersen states. "In the second phase, we will look to Scandinavia where we see Copenhagen and Stockholm as the most interesting cities to serve. We are also considering going further afield at a later stage."

Color Air operates a spoke-and-hub system from its base at Oslo’s new international airport (OSL). The first flights were to Ålesund and Trondheim. Bergen was added from August 15. At the start, there were plans to add Stavanger in November, while domestic routes to Kristiansand and Tromsø were being considered. “Initially, we have and will concentrate on Norway_which is and will be our primary market,” Mr. Andersen told Airways in August. “In the second phase, we will look to Scandinavia where we see Copenhagen and Stockholm as the most interesting cities to serve. We are also considering going further afield at a later stage.”
However, the deregulated skies of Norway are ever turbulent and at the time of going to press, the opening of Stavanger has been deferred to the summer program. Instead of opening Stavanger with only two daily returns, Color Air has chosen to open London—Stansted as its first international destination starting 1 December. This is done in direct competition with Braathens from OSL and Ryanair from Torp (TRF).
When opening Stansted, Color Air looked at the competing airlines load factors from OSL to all London airports and found them to be very high, as are the prices. The three airlines flying to London from OSL (BA, Braathens and SAS) are all “full service” airlines with a fare structure reflecting this. Ryanair operates a no-frills service from TRF (Oslo South in Ryanair’s marketing) some 70 miles south of Oslo. Color Air’s studies have shown that most of Ryanair’s traffic is generated from OSL’s catchment area. Another aspect is that TRF lies some 70 miles south of Oslo with little public transport connections. OSL is 30 miles from the city with excellent public transport connections making the ground travel to OSL much more convenient and will have all the domestic connections. Color Air calculates that 90% of their London passengers will originate in Norway.

Men bare lavpris.
