Qantas Operates Longest Scheduled Service Using A380
January 26, 2005 - Qantas intends to deploy the Airbus 380 in a configuration boasting a capacity of 501 seats on routes such as that linking Melbourne and Los Angeles, spanning a distance of 12,749 kilometers. As such, the Australian carrier will begin operating the longest scheduled service using this new machine, capable of bridging a distance of up to 15,000 kilometers non-stop. "Never in the history of civil aviation has it been possible to transport so many passengers over such a long distance in a single flight," said Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon. Qantas has ordered 12 A380s with an option on 10 additional aircraft of this type. The first A380 is scheduled for delivery in October 2006. The new European aircraft will also be used to connect Sydney and Los Angeles and will be deployed on routes to London via Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore. |
