Ryanair refuses to pull 'victory' ad
(Source : The Guardian, July 16, 2005)
Ryanair yesterday refused to withdraw an advertisement which prompted a barrage of complaints to the advertising watchdog because of its attempt to sell tickets on the back of the London bombings. The full-page advertisements, which appeared in national newspapers yesterday, were headed 'London fights back' and included a photograph of Winston Churchill in
RAF uniform, smoking a cigar and giving the victory sign. A speech bubble contains a three-line parody of one of his most famous speeches made in June 1940: 'We shall fly them to the beaches, we shall fly them to the hills, we shall fly them to London!' The advertisement, with a final tag line reading 'Let's keep London flying', announces a sale of 3m seats from UKP15 in August, September and October. The Advertising Standards Authority said members of the public had described the ads as 'crass, offensive and insensitive'.
