Asia Pacific 727F cargo door opens during takeoff
Darren Shannon, Washington DC (23Dec05, 17:47 GMT, 179 words)

An Asia Pacific Airlines Boeing 727 freighter had to return to Marshall Islands airport on December 21 after a cargo door opened during takeoff.

In a brief report published today by the US FAA, the aircraft returned to the airport and landed without incident. Freight had spilled onto the runway during takeoff.

The Danville, California-headquartered cargo operator was not immediately available for comment. The FAA’s report does not include any more detail.

According to the carrier’s web site, the 727F was starting a service that was to stop in Honolulu, Pago Pago in American Samoa and Nuku Alofa in Tonga.

The web site also notes that the aircraft was scheduled for maintenance on December 19.

Asia Pacific, which operates from a base in Guam, has leased the Pratt and Whitney JT8D-17-powered aircraft from Finova Capital since the lessor converted the aircraft, N86425, in 2001.

The aircraft was built in 1978, and was initially operated by Singapore Airlines until 1981. It has since been operated by Air Micronesia, Alaska Airlines and Continental Airlines as well as the Continental’s Micronesia division.
