Finnair to increase bellyhold service to Asia
By Phil Hastings
London: Finnair is set to introduce more bellyhold cargo capacity out of Asia next year, notably Japan, following the addition of another two MD-11 passenger aircraft to its fleet.
The Finnish carrier, which last month opened a further Asian route into its Helsinki hub - out of Guangzhou, China - said it planned to add a seventh MD-11 in December and an eighth during 2006.
"We need more capacity as we open new routes in Asia and add frequencies to our current destinations,'' said Finnair president and chief executive officer Keijo Suila.
Those developments, he told an investors' meeting in Helsinki, would include the launch next summer of a third Japanese route, out of Nagoya.
"Within a couple of years, we will have some 10 wide-body aircraft. We will add between one and two new destinations in Asia per year and increase frequencies to current destinations,'' he added.
