Thai Airways Flight 951 CPH – BKK

Aircraft: 747-400
Class: Business Class (old style)
Seat: 15 A/C
Departure: 1435 local time
Arrival: 0600 local time

My travel companion and me arrived with Scandinavian Airlines to Copenhagen after an uneventful flight on a Dash 7-Q400. Unfortunately this flight was delayed so there was no extra time in the airport to get our planned meal at A Hereford Steakhouse. We had only time for a quick drink in the SAS Scandinavian lounge before we had to continue through passport control and to the gate (What a priority – drinks before food! ).

Boarding was already started when we arrived to the gate area. So boarding was a breeze as there was no line of passengers waiting for boarding. We found our way upstairs to the business class section and occupied our seats witch was 15 a/c. This was our first time flying TH business class. We have both experiences with the intercontinental business classes of KLM, Northwest, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Delta Airlines and Singapore Airlines so we thought we had some experience to compare the business class of Thai Airways to.

I was aware through the forums on the Internet not to expect too much from the seats on the Thai Business class. As many of you maybe already know, Thai have two configurations on their 744’s as they are currently putting in new generation’s biz and first class seats. As a consequence of this as from April 1st the company changed their concept into moving business passengers into the first class cabin and making a new Economy Extra into the business class section. Unfortunately for us out trip was March 25. So here are the facts:

The seats were in a 2-2 configuration on the upper deck. The space between the seats was ridiculous for a business cabin and recline of the seats was just a joke. The best part of the seats was that the divider between the seats could be taken off, so that made it a little sofa. Great for two big guys sharing a/c seats! There was no footrest on the seat, except the fold down one for your feet at the seat in front of you. But this was at no help. No personal TV’s either, but you could have small DVD players with a screen on a first come – first served basis. There was a big fold down screen in front of the cabin, which made the access to the restrooms very difficult. You really had to bend down to get under it.

Luckily the departure time was in daytime and landing was at 1am “our” time and since we where on our way to a nice holiday we had no plans of sleeping on the plane. There where only 10 passengers in the upper deck witch had room for 20 so there was plenty of room. There were no passengers in the lower biz-cabin and no first class passengers on this flight. Economy class was pretty full though.

After boarding, champagne was served. That’s always a pleasure which we where too polite not to deny. The FA’s also distributed menus and amenity kits. After take-off the drink service began. Since there where not so many passengers in the cabin, the service were excellent all the way.

After take off, the FA’s rolled out the pre-dinner drinks trolley. In addition to the normal drinks offered, they also served cocktails like Dry Martini and Bloody Mary.

The lunch/dinner menu was as follows:

Appetizer
Fried Thai Curry Fish Mousse Cake
***
Starter:
Goose liver terrine, shrimps, salad leaves
***
Main course
Veal chasseur with chasseur sauce, rösti potatoes and broccoli
Or
Stir fried pork with ginger, steamed jasmine rice and mixed vegetables
Or
Steamed cod fish with olive tapenade, black pasta, and stewed vegetables
Or
Beef curry massaman, steamed jasmine rice, carrots and green peas
***
Cheeseboard cut and served from a trolley
***
Dessert
Crème Brulee with raspberries
***
Tea, coffee, espresso, cappuhino
Kahlua, Drambuie, Grand Marnier, Hennessy VSOP

Wines
Champagne
Charles Lafitte

White wine
Rully 1999
Gewurtztraminer Bollenberg Bestheim 2000

Red wine
Chateau La Verrerie 1999
Savigny-Les-Beaune 1999

The Thai fishcake appetiser was not my taste. I had a good hope for the starter with Foie Gras and shrimps. Foie Gras is always a pleasure, but I was disappointed when there was no other thing to accomplish the dish then some shrimps that was not fresh. I would have expected some syrup or a kind of sauce with it. But there was none. The Foie gras looked like it had only been sliced after it came out of a tin can. So the presentation was disappointing. The side bread though was excellent. But I had expected more on the food side in Biz-class. My main course was filet of pork with potatoes and veggies. Not more than ok that also. The cheese was served from a trolley, and you could pick the ones you like. There where 3 different to choose from. There was Brie, a blue cheese and a sweet cream cheese. After that the dessert was served. Only one dish here so no big decision to make. The dessert was a crème brulee made in a in a tart. That was the best part of the meal actually.

There where two red wines and two white wines to choose from.

After dinner coffee and avec was served from a trolley.

About 3,5 hours after departure the lights was dimmed. But one of the best parts with Thai was that the FA’s didn’t disappear as we have seen a lot of times on other carriers. So for us holiday passengers, there was no problem in getting served more drinks during the flight. The FA’s also put up a little buffet down by the galley so if you wanted to move around a bit, you where welcome to help yourself from the buffet, which consisted of drinks and some snacks.

So for the next ours of the flight we where talking, drinking some more and enjoyed our self. We only

1,5 hours from BKK breakfast service began.

Menu
Fresh fruit and Yoghurt
***
Parsley omelette, chicken cubes, mushroom and tomato sauce
Or
Pancake with spinach and feta cheese, chicken sausage, broccoli and cherry tomato
Or
Instant noodle soup with Chinese roast pork
***
Roll, croissant, danish pastry, butter, jam or marmalade
Coffee, tea

I had the omelette, and that was pretty standard. After the breakfast was stowed away landing was only 40 minutes later.

Landing was swift and so was the disembarkation. Thanks to my travel companions addiction to cigarettes there was a huge line of people waiting in line for the immigration. No one told us that there was a separate line for biz/1st passengers on TG. But there was! After waiting in the line for 30 minutes, then by coincident we saw the empty line where we “belonged” and rushed over there. The bags were waiting on us on the belt when we arrived at the stand.

Conclusion: We had a nice flight with good service. The food was not top class, and the seats are now history in the biz-class, and I think that is for the best for Thai Airways and their premium passengers.

Jaja!

Jaja! 21 hours AND counting!

Alltid kjekt å benytte seg av Diners lounger når man er rundt omkring. Eurobonuskort med tilgang er ikke realistisk;)
