Today the Department of Transportation (DOT) issued its preliminary decision awarding the 2007 China frequencies to United Airlines (UA) for its proposed Washington Dulles (IAD) – Beijing (PEK) service.
“Continental is disappointed in the DOT’s decision. We offered the largest market in this proceeding and the opportunity to benefit the most consumers with direct service,” said International Policy and Regulatory Director Dan Weiss. “We have known all along this promised to be a tough route case, and while we believe DOT should have chosen Continental, we competed hard, fought hard for this new route and had great support from co-workers, customers, state/civic parties, corporate partners and our hub-state Congressional representatives.”
Separately, CO continues to work with the U.S. government and supports its efforts to encourage China to further liberalize the U.S. – China aviation agreement, thus allowing for future opportunities for CO China service. CO will also compete in future China route cases and, when appropriate, will again ask all co-workers to help win additional rights to China.
