TAM grows as Varig shrinks
Brazilian airline TAM is on the up and planning to expand in Europe. A sales office was recently opened in Stockholm and the company is considering plans to launch a route between Brazil and Sweden.
TAM has seen extremely positive development in its traffic figures in recent years and today the company accounts for almost half of Brazilian domestic flights. TAM has also grown substantially in the Mercosul area (southern South-American countries) and its interest in long-haul routes is now growing in earnest.
TAM currently flies to two destinations in the US (Miami and New York) and to Paris in Europe. Two daily flights on the Paris-São Paulo route are offered in cooperation with Air France, and TAM launched a route from Recife to Paris, which is operated twice a week.
Now that Varig is on the defensive, TAM is seizing the opportunity to expand in Europe. From October 29, the number of departures on the Paris-São Paulo route will increase to three per day and a daily connection to London will also be launched. Furthermore, there are plans for routes to Italy and Spain, although nothing has been finalized to date. Sweden is one of the most attractive countries for TAM in Northern Europe and a decision on a possible route may be made in the next few months.
