US low-cost carrier Allegiant Air has inked a new lease agreement with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) for five more McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series aircraft.
The Las Vegas-based airline will take delivery of five MD-82s - bearing serial numbers 49910, 49554, 53294, 53295 and 53296 - between the fourth quarter of this year and the second quarter of 2005.
Sigma Aircraft Management of the UK, which arranged the lease agreement for Allegiant, says three of the MD-82s will be upgraded to MD-83s prior to delivery.
Allegiant currently operates a fleet of nine aircraft, including two MD-87s, four MD-82s and three MD-83s.
This week, the carrier took delivery of its tenth aircraft, a MD-83. This was the last of six aircraft delivered by SAS to Allegiant under a 2003 agreement between the two companies.
By the middle of next year, Allegiant will be operating 14 aircraft, after it returns one MD-80 series aircraft to its lessor, says Allegiant managing director Ponder Harrison.
He says the additional capacity will be used to expand the carrier’s operations from Las Vegas.
